The driving force for the
Society’s incorporation on 11 November 1933 was Mr R D Brown,
Chartered Accountant and Mayor of Hastings. The aim was to
provide an avenue of investment within Hastings that enabled
Hastings people to put their money together and provide funds
for lending to other people of Hastings.
The Society has operated from the accounting practice offices of
R D Brown and successor firms. Brown Webb Richardson Ltd (BWR),
Chartered Accountants, provide the secretarial and managerial
services to the Society.
BWR provide the staff and resources required for the Society’s
day-to-day operations and the small team operate as a cashless
branch from their offices.
As overheads are low and we do not provide transactional banking
and insurance, this allows us to provide competitive interest
rates with no charges.
An independent and experienced Board of Directors governs the
Society. The Society also operates within a Trust Deed, the
Trustee being Trustees Executors Ltd.
The Heretaunga Building Society is a
member of the NZ Savings Institutions Association, an industry
association of non-bank financial institutions.
We are involved in a number of local sponsorships including the
Hastings Opera House, Riding for the Disabled and Bridge Pa
Junior Golf. We also make donations to worthwhile causes like
our recent donation of two bone guns to the Hawkes Bay Branch of
St John’s Ambulance.
